Suggestions for a successful playgroup:

Be creative: Consider varying themes or locations. Have a different focus to your playgroup each week. This can be a toddler ballgame, nature hike, arts and crafts. One week the Playgroup could go to the botanical gardens and another week the county fair or a children's dance performance.

Be considerate: Since many playgroups are hosted at someone's home, plan to finish on time and help the host clean up afterwards. Do your best to inform members of your group if you are unable to attend. Be respectful; refrain from bringing a sick child to playgroup or do your best to remove a disruptive child.

Be safe: Whatever the venue for the playgroup ensure that it is clean, safe and age-appropriate. Make sure all shared toys are cleaned and washed regularly. Ensure that all members know their responsibilities for supervising their child at all times.

Be patient: It takes time to find and manage a successful playgroup. Be receptive to input from all members, and respect others' diversity and experiences. Take the time to communicate effectively. If you find you are uncomfortable with a particular playgroup or it is not meeting your needs, feel free to join a different one. If you may find that you don't want to commit to a schedule, there are drop-in groups and one-time events as well.

Be confident: You can also create your own playgroup to meet your specific needs. Be aware it may take some time to build your group, but rest assured there are other families looking for the same things as you if you have the patience to seek them out.
